Helicopters come to the rescue again

Problems within the oil and gas sector may be creating some challenges for the helicopter industry, but one area where the aircraft continue to prove their worth is ‘search and rescue’.

In the UK, this week we once again saw the value of helicopters, as an aircraft in Cornwall, UK, took part in a rescue to save two swimmers who had been swept out to sea by a strong rip current.

With many swimmers unaware of the dangers that rip currents pose – a flow of water that can be strong enough to overcome an Olympic swimmer – there will always be a need for search and rescue operations along the coasts of many countries, particularly when lifeguards are not always present.
